BANTEAY SREY (The Citadel of Women), KABAL SPEAN ( Thaousand Linga)
&
BAKONG (Pyramid Tower), BANG MELEA ( Jungle Ruin) TEMPLES TOUR

Banteay Srey

Banteay Srey loosely translates to ‘citadel of the women,’ but this is a modern appellation that probably refers to the delicate beauty of the carvings. Built at a time when the Khmer Empire was gaining significant power and territory, the temple was constructed by a Brahmin counselor under a powerful king, Rajendravarman and later under Jayavarman V. Banteay Srey displays some of the finest examples of classical Khmer art. The walls are densely covered with some of the most beautiful, deep and intricate carvings of any Angkorian temple. The temple's relatively small size, pink sandstone construction and ornate design give it a fairyland ambiance

Bang MeleaBangmelea Temple

Beng Mealea is located 63km east of town and is a real jungle temple, about one square kilometer. Trees growing firm the broken towers and galleries offer some of the best tree in temple shots aside from Ta Prom. There are some lintel and doorway carvings, there are no bas-reliefs and the carvings are comparatively sparse. When the temple was active, the walls may have been covered, painted or and frescos.

Bakong Temple

BAKONG represents a prototype of Khmer temple mountains, the first to be built in sandstone. It is also larger and set the style for later ones to come. It was believed to have started by Jayavarman III, doing it in literati. Indravarman I completed the job in sandstone as last big project. Bakong comprises a massive five-tier pyramid surrounded by chambers, chapels and prasats(towers). From the east side by a causeway, which leads to the pyramid, the symbolize Mount Meru. The founding of Bakong was documented on a stone tablet, or stalae, which describes the consecration of its linga, called Sri Indresrava, in 881 AD.

Kabal SpeanKabal SpeanKABAL SPEAN is known as the "River of a Thousand Linga"
(a linga is a phallic symbol representing the Hindu god Shiva) Dating from the early 11th century, the relief carvings that line the stream beds are said to purify the water before it fills the reservoirs (called barays) of Angkor. It's the journey here that's really interesting, through rural villages north of Banteay Srei and there's a fun forest hike (about 30 min. to the first waterfall). And it's a good spot to swim or follow the path that trips along at brook side; from there, you can view the many carvings in relief on the banks and creek bed.
