Koh ker is
100 killometres away from Siem Reap.
It was the capital of Khmer Empire, and very unique period in the Age of
Angkor. From the time, Khmer capital was first moved to the Angkor
area in the late 9th century, it would remain there for
almost 500 years. The monuments of Koh Ker
are on the road loop around the baray past the most important
temple. The monuments available to see are Prasat Pram, Prasat Thom,
Prasat Neang Khmau, Linga at Prasat Balang, Prasat Thneng, Prasat Chreng,
Elephant at Prasat Damrei.

Beng Mealea
is a jungle temple covering over one square kilometer. Trees growing
firm the broken towers and galleries offer some of the best tree in
temple shots aside from Ta Prom. There are some lintel and doorway
carvings, there are no bas-reliefs and the carvings are comparatively
sparse. When the temple was active, the walls may have been covered,
painted or hand frescos.
Bakong
represents a prototype of Khmer temple mountains, the first to be built
in sandstone. It is also larger and set the style for later ones to
come. It was believed to have started by Jayavarman III, doing it in
literati. Indravarman I completed the job in sandstone as last big
project.
Bakong comprises a massive five-tier pyramid surrounded by chambers,
chapels and prasats(towers).
It is approached from the
east side by a
causeway, which leads to the
pyramid, the symbolize Mount Meru. The founding of Bakong was
documented on a stone tablet, or stalae,
which describes the consecration of its linga, called Sri Indresrava, in
881 AD. The reconstructed
pyramid, The five tiers each represent a different realm of nagas, garudas, rakshasas,yakshas and
finally maharajas. At
the corners of the three bottom tiers are statues of elephants. The
fourth tier has small shrines, numbering twelve in total, placed at
regular intervals.
The trip
start at 7:00am pass by the local market of Phsa Dam Dek, take a walk a
bit with a quick photo, then sightseeing to countryside with the daily
life of the people, rice field, buffalo and cow on the way to Koh Ker.
