Android Auto Update: Cast Support & Material Music Player Redesign (2026)

Exciting developments are brewing in the world of Android Auto, and they’re poised to change how you interact with your car’s infotainment system. But here’s where it gets controversial: Google seems to be quietly laying the groundwork for Google Cast support in Android Auto, a move that could revolutionize in-car entertainment—or leave some users scratching their heads about its practicality. Let’s dive into the details.

In our latest APK Insight exploration, we’ve dissected the newest version of an Android Auto application uploaded to the Play Store. By decompiling the APK (Android application package), we’ve uncovered code snippets that hint at potential future features. It’s important to note that these features may never see the light of day, and our interpretation might not be spot-on. However, we’ve managed to activate some of the more polished elements to give you a sneak peek at what could be coming.

Following the rollout of Google Cast support for Android Automotive last year—starting with Rivian, which runs on Android Automotive, as we exclusively reported—it appears Google is now eyeing Android Auto for similar functionality. In the beta version of Android Auto 15.9.655104, we spotted new code strings tied to the Media Router framework, explicitly referencing Google Cast in the context of a car. These include:

  • Cast
  • Cast. Connected
  • Cast. Connecting
  • Cast. Disconnected
  • Make sure the other device is on the same Wi-Fi network as this car
  • Make sure the other device is on the same Wi-Fi network as this phone
  • Stop
  • Stop casting

While these strings are somewhat generic, it’s hard to imagine another reason for their inclusion unless Google is indeed planning to integrate Cast into Android Auto. Given that Android Automotive already supports this feature and Google has teased video capabilities for Android Auto, adding Cast seems like a logical next step. And this is the part most people miss: If implemented, this could open up new possibilities for streaming media directly to your car’s display, though it raises questions about driver distraction and Wi-Fi connectivity in vehicles.

But that’s not all—a hidden UI change in Android Auto 15.9 reveals Google is also working on a Material 3 Expressive redesign for the media player. The team at Android Authority managed to activate this update, uncovering a sleek new progress bar and refreshed button designs that appear both in the full music app and the dashboard widget. Google first hinted at these changes back in May, but the progress since then is impressive.

As always, there’s no word on when—or even if—these updates will roll out. Yet, the potential implications are significant. Here’s a thought-provoking question for you: With Google Cast potentially coming to Android Auto, do you think this will enhance your driving experience, or is it a feature better suited for parked entertainment? Let us know in the comments!
