An alarming incident in Belfast has raised serious concerns as police seek witnesses after three city council employees were violently assaulted in the heart of the city.
The chief executive of Belfast City Council, John Walsh, has spoken out against this disturbing attack that left the workers hospitalized. The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning, and it wasn't just a physical confrontation; the victims also faced verbal harassment during the assault.
Walsh firmly stated, "This was an unwarranted attack on three council workers, simply out doing their job and delivering key services for our city." His strong condemnation underscores the gravity of the situation, as he called on anyone who might have information to assist the police in their investigation.
According to Inspector Knowles, reports emerged around 12:40 a.m., indicating that the three men, believed to be council workers, were assaulted by two unidentified males while they were performing their duties in the Little Donegall Street area. The inspector detailed that all three men sustained injuries, having been punched in the face and neck, with one of them suffering a hand injury.
The attack began when an unknown assailant approached the council workers, verbally abusing them before escalating to physical violence. This initial attacker was soon joined by a second individual, furthering the assault. Witness descriptions mention one of the suspects as slim with blond hair, dressed in a grey tracksuit. After the incident, all three injured men were taken to the hospital for medical attention.
In light of this incident, the police reiterated the importance of community support, emphasizing that assaults on council workers, who play a crucial role in the community, are intolerable. They are calling on anyone who might have witnessed the event to step forward and assist in the ongoing investigation.
DUP MLA Phillip Brett labeled the assault as “disgraceful,” asserting that these workers were simply fulfilling their responsibilities to the public. He expressed his commitment to ensuring that those responsible are identified and face appropriate consequences. Furthermore, Brett highlighted the need for transparency regarding the motives behind such attacks, stating, "Council staff deserve transparency, reassurance, and the right to work without fear or intimidation. There can be absolutely no justification for targeting public sector workers. I stand firmly with the staff affected and their colleagues."
Sinn Féin councillor Ronan McLaughlin also voiced his condemnation of the attack, deeming it a shocking act against individuals dedicated to serving the community. He extended his sympathies to the injured workers, wishing them a swift recovery, and urged anyone with knowledge of the incident to come forward to the authorities.
