A chilling silence has fallen over Mars, as NASA's MAVEN spacecraft, a vital probe studying the Red Planet's atmosphere for over a decade, has gone silent. This is a situation that has space enthusiasts and scientists alike holding their breath. The mission team is working tirelessly to re-establish contact, but the latest news isn't encouraging.
On December 4th, the MAVEN (Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN) spacecraft stopped sending back its usual stream of data. A brief fragment of tracking data was recovered on December 6th, but it indicated that the orbiter was rotating in an 'unexpected manner' and its orbital path might have changed. NASA is still trying to figure out what caused the loss of signal, and they're also working hard to get back in touch with MAVEN.
Launched in November 2013, MAVEN entered Mars' orbit ten months later. Its main job has been to study the planet's atmosphere, trying to figure out how much of it has been lost over time. It does this by measuring how the atmosphere is escaping now and then working backward. This helps scientists understand how Mars has changed over billions of years.
But here's where it gets controversial... MAVEN also acts as a crucial communication link. It helps NASA's ground control talk to the Perseverance and Curiosity rovers on the Martian surface. This isn't the first time MAVEN has faced trouble. In 2022, NASA lost contact with the spacecraft for a long time. When they re-established contact, they found a problem with the Internal Measurement Units (IMUs), which are essential for navigation. The team solved this by putting MAVEN into a 'safe mode' and using a new software to navigate using stars. This system is still in use today, but it seems the spacecraft is disoriented again.
MAVEN was only meant to last a year, but it's now in its 11th year of operation. If NASA can fix the problem, the orbiter has enough fuel to keep going until the end of the decade.
And this is the part most people miss... The future of MAVEN is uncertain. The proposed NASA budget for the fiscal year 2026 aims to cut funding for MAVEN and other missions that have gone beyond their planned lifespans. However, the Senate could potentially save them.
