Omloop het Nieuwsblad Wheel Failure: Cadex Blames Cobbles, Not Hookless Rims (2026)

Cadex has released a statement, denying the blame for Amaury Capiot's wheel failure at Omloop het Nieuwsblad. The brand, known for its hookless rims, suggests that the tire separation was not caused by the rim design, but rather by prolonged riding over cobblestones with a flat and damaged rear Cadex Aero Cotton tire. This structural rim failure is believed to have caused the spokes to displace from the hub, leading to the wheel's collapse and the complete unseating of the tire. However, the use of a tire liner, a common addition to tubeless setups for improved 'run-flat' riding, is also being examined. While the liner was in place, it wasn't sufficient to prevent the rim failure. According to Cadex, the initial impact occurred at approximately 47-48kph, and the rider continued on cobbled sections until the wheel collapsed. The brand emphasizes that the rim remained stable enough to prevent a crash, despite the extreme forces involved. This incident raises questions about the use of tire liners with hookless rims, as neither Giant nor Cadex recommends their use. The team was operating outside these guidelines, but there's no suggestion that the liner contributed to the failure. The controversy lies in the interpretation of the incident's cause, with some questioning the effectiveness of tire liners in such situations. What do you think? Do you agree or disagree with Cadex's assessment? Share your thoughts in the comments.
