The digital world is rapidly evolving, and with it, concerns about our children's safety online are growing. Australia has taken a bold step, and now the world is watching: Will other countries follow suit and ban social media for those under 16?
Australia's recent move to restrict social media access for children under 16 has sent ripples across the globe. The Australian Senate passed a law that effectively bans under-16s from platforms like TikTok, Facebook, Snapchat, Reddit, and X. This groundbreaking legislation, which came into effect on December 10, forces social media giants to verify the age of their users, with hefty fines of up to $32 million for non-compliance.
But here's where it gets controversial: while some applaud this initiative, others, including tech companies, teenagers, and experts, have expressed mixed reactions.
Governments worldwide are now seriously considering similar actions. Daisy Greenwell, co-founder of the U.K.-based Smartphone Free Childhood, highlights the growing pressure on governments to act, stating that the current situation isn't working for children, parents, or society. She believes that as confidence and evidence accumulate, more countries will adopt similar policies.
The U.K. is seen as a likely frontrunner, with other nations like France, Denmark, Spain, Germany, Italy, and Greece also contemplating bans. The U.S., however, is taking a more cautious approach, with a national ban appearing unlikely. But, there is interest at the state and local levels. Ravi Iyer from the University of Southern California Marshall School's Neely Center, who has worked with social psychologist Jonathan Haidt, author of The Anxious Generation, suggests that state-level bans are more probable in the coming years, with California and Texas already exploring such measures.
And this is the part most people miss: While these bans aim to protect children, they also face resistance from tech giants. Reddit has already challenged the Australian law, and Meta has urged reconsideration. Elon Musk's X has stated that they are simply complying with the law.
In the U.K., the push for a ban is gaining momentum. The House of Lords is expected to vote on amending the Children's Wellbeing and Schools Bill to include a social media ban for under-16s. A recent email campaign by Smartphone Free Childhood saw over 100,000 emails sent to U.K. lawmakers, urging them to establish age-appropriate boundaries. Greenwell emphasizes the link between increased screen time and negative mental health outcomes, suggesting that removing these platforms could help young people reconnect with each other and the real world.
U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer has voiced his support, emphasizing the need to protect children from social media and highlighting concerns about excessive screen time for young children. France is also a strong contender, with President Emmanuel Macron backing a bill to restrict social media access for those under 15.
USC's Iyer points out that a global ban could alleviate the pressure on young people to conform, as the norm would shift, and teens would no longer feel compelled to use social media just because their friends do.
